Foundation Modules (Year 1)

The modules shown below are those running in the 2016-17 academic year. The CDT is committed to providing broad training across these key areas, but the structure of this training and the teaching personnel involved may change in future years. The course structure allows some flexibility to meet individual needs.

Cells and Systems

Fundamental concepts in molecular and cellular biology and genetics, and in the structural and functional aspects of biological systems.
Essential Mathematics

Dr Jonathan Cooper

Fundamental concepts and methods in mathematics and statistics for students who have little formal training in mathematics (e.g. chemists).
Organic Chemistry

Dr John Kiappes Jr

Fundamental concepts in organic chemistry that are essential for research at the molecular level. Includes a week of laboratory based work.
Introduction to Experimental Bioscience

Dr Gail Preston

Laboratory-based course a hands-on introduction to techniques used in molecular and cell biology, including experimental design and data curation. Students gain skills in cell culture, purification and analysis of nucleic acids and proteins, and the use of light and fluorescence microscopy and imaging techniques.
Programming and Software Carpentry

Dr Eoin Malins and Prof Garrett Morris

An introduction to programming plus good software development skills including program design, version control, testing, and automating tasks, showing how these lead to robust and consistent code, and hence contribute to quality, usable, reproducible research. Students are taught at different levels dependent on background.
Drug Discovery

Prof Garrett Morris

The practice of pharmaceutical discovery from drug target discovery to clinical trials. A large part of the material is delivered by leaders in industry (Inhibox, Pfizer, Vernalis, UCB and Roche). Concludes with the Drug Discovery Game, an interactive exercise designed and facilitated by scientists from Pfizer, that takes students through a simulated drug discovery project.
Scientific Computing

Dr Martin Robinson

Core techniques in scientific programming for applications in biology and biomedicine. Introduces students to the widely used Matlab programming language. Topics include: statistical analyses and data summary; functions; numerical methods; discrete and stochastic modelling; analytical methods and the principles of software
Statistics

Prof Jotun Hein

This module takes you through the following topics: Basic Concepts, Markov Chains and Processes, Bayesian Statistics, Markov Chain Monte Carlo, Generalized Linear Modelling, Hidden Markov Models, Model Choice and Markov Random Fields.
